Local Cuisine

Yin & Yang. Horse & Carriage. Laurel & Hardy. Travel & Food. You shouldn’t accept the former without the latter. It is said that ‘love goes trough the stomach’ and we certainly want you to love our trips. So here’s some useful information about Thai cuisine, may it tempt you to download our sample itineraries or get in touch.

Tom Yum Goong
What’s in it: shrimp, mushrooms, tomatoes, lemongrass, galangal and kaffir lime leaves, coconut milk. Why we love it: This soup can be seen as a reflection of all Thai Flavors. Strong hints of sour, salty spicy and sweet can all be found in one bowl. Combine that with delicious and fresh Thai Shrimp and you have a meal fit for anyone. Also the low level of spice in this dish makes it a great introduction to Thai Cuisine.
Gang Keow Wan
What's in it: Green curry paste, coconut milk, bamboo shoots, chicken, Thai basil, Thai eggplant and the following herbs (lemongrass, galangal, lime leaves etc). Why we love it: The delightful pairing of spicy green curry with mellow vegetables and protein make this a delightful yin-yang pairing to the palate.
Kao Na Phet
What's in it: Roasted Duck, Duck Stock, Rice. Why we love it: This dish is a great reminder of China’s influence in the region as well as the simple deliciousness of a well-cooked protein.
Kai Jiew Moo Saap
What's in it: Egg, fish sauce, soy sauce, minced pork, rice. Why we love it: A great example of Thai comfort food that no two street vendors or restaurants cook alike. The delightful umami quality of the fish sauce compliments the sweetness of the eggs and pork.
Kao Mok Gai
What's in it: rice, chicken, chicken stock saffron, turmeric, cardamom and bay leaves. Why we love it: This dish is a great reminder as to the multiculturalism of Thailand, offering those who sample it a link into Thailand’s too-often overlooked Muslim culture. This is not as common as other Thai delicacies but is well worth the effort to find!
Pad Ga Pow Moo Kai Dow
What's in it: Chicken, Pork, Garlic, Chilies, green beans, basil, rice, egg. Why we love it: This stir-fried dish may seem like common fare, but the chilies and basil combine to give the offering a knockout punch that wins over almost any diner. Also the sheer size of the dish make it a wonderful communal order for sharing with family and friends.
Yam Plah Duk Foo
What's in it: Cat Fish, Sour Mango, Sweet Sugar, tart lime, red onions, cilantro, fish sauce, peanut sauce. Why we love it: Again a classic use of the Thai four flavors (sour, salty spicy and sweet) make this an unforgettable dish. The catfish (fried) offers diners a delicious and crunch texture, mixed with the soft flesh of the fish as they experience a sensory overload.
Som Tam
What's in it: Ingredients: Garlic, chilies, Tamarind Juice, Fish sauce, peanuts, dried shrimp, tomatoes, lime juice, sugar cane paste, string beans, and grated green papaya. Why we love it: A great example of a Thai spicy salad, this dish takes hold and grabs you immediately with its crisp textures and sharp flavors. A must try while you are dining in Thailand.
A small sample of our preferred dining venues in Thailand…
Somboon (Bangkok)
With 5 branches in Bangkok this is one of the top seafood dining venues in town. They are known for specializing in shellfish dishes (such as garlic shrimp and curry powder crab) along with fish dishes that require a delicate touch (such as soy-steamed sea bass).
Issaya Club (Bangkok)
Chef Ian’s cuisine is famous for both the freshness of what is offered and the reconstitution of traditional Thai flavors into unique forms. Issaya was one of the first restaurants to pioneer in farm-to-table dining in Thailand and has strived to keep this ethos alive and well in the cuisine offered.
Nahm (Bangkok)
Considered by many the top Thai restaurant in Bangkok, Australian-born chef David Thompson is a Thai cuisine scholar with the Michelin recognition to prove his knowledge in the kitchen. There is no trickery, sleight of hand or fusion which have earned this restaurant its countless accolades, simply incredibly fresh ingredients, dishes executed with surgical detail and a chef with a boundless passion for Thai food and its people. A must try for any foodie venturing through Bangkok.
Soul Food (Bangkok)
The concept of ‘Soul Food’ in America is no frills, deep and delicious cooking, designed to both please the tongue and fill the stomach. This concept has been taken by an American expat and executed within Bangkok using classic ‘like mom used to make’ Thai fare. This simple combination of Old and New, foreign and local has made Soul Food one of the most highly decorated restaurants in all of Thailand.
Farang Ses (Chiang Mai)
Perhaps the finest French cuisine in Thailand, the Farang Ses offers a royal atmosphere coupled with haute cuisine in Thailand’s northern kingdom. Chef Carlos Manuel Gaudencios’ restaurant goes over the top in both décor and dining to provide guests with a French meal that feels as if you are dining at a private party in a French manor rather than mere miles away from lush rainforests and peaceful elephants. A must for any honeymooners or romance seekers while staying in Chiang Mai.
