broadwayOld industrial buildings on the banks of Shanghai's Huangpu River could be converted to form ‘China's Broadway', according to city officials. The new 70,000m2 development, comprising disused cement factories and other abandoned buildings, could be transformed to rival New York's famous theatre district.

In total, the city is planning to redevelop a 1.4km2 area surrounding the factories. The cultural and theatre area will be developed at near Longshui Road, while the surrounding area will become a riverside business centre including a 250-metre-tall skyscraper. The idea is to make the riverside into an eco-friendly area and open it up to the masses.

vietnambridgeTwo weeks ago, the longest river tunnel in Southeast Asia has opened to traffic in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam. The Thu Thiem tunnel, which is 1,490m long and 33m wide, allows traffic to pass under the Saigon River, alleviating congestion on the city's Saigon Bridge.

The tunnel is part of the East-West Highway and will help reduce travelling times between the capital and other destinations in the Mekong Delta.

hakkatulouIn case you are looking for something different than a hotel to stay overnight, what about an overnight stay in an authentic tulou in southern Fujian province, near Xiamen? A tulou is a round structure constructed by the Hakka people and made of rammed earth. Designed for defendable purposes, it has only one reinforced entrance and housed up to 600 people in better times.

Accommodation in a tulou is rather basic but better alternatives in the area are available as well.

With the worst of Thailand's flood crisis over, there are plenty of signs that Bangkok is returning to normal, though some neighborhoods in the north and west of the city are still waterlogged. Major tourist areas in central Bangkok escaped the crisis without seeing any floods and the city's food and drink supply shortage is easing.

All airports in Thailand are operating as usual, with the exception of Don Muang, Bangkok's secondary domestic airport. It will take at least two months before the still flooded airport will be operational again. All operations have been moved to Suvarnabhumi, Bangkok's main international airport.

Thailand's major tourist destinations (such as Chiang Mai, Chiang Rai, Lampang, Sukhothai, Kanchanaburi, Ratchburi, Pattaya, Ko Chang, Rayong, Phuket, Krabi, Trang and Ko Samui) are all flood free. In the ancient capital Ayutthaya, flood waters have subsided in most areas and some attractions have reopened.
